Delta State Government and The Sun Publishing Limited are collaborating to host the first edition of The Sun Women Leadership Summit (SWLS) as a mark of respect and support for the Nigerian woman, how far she has come and what she has achieved in building Nigeria.
In a statement signed by, Mr. Sunny Ogefere, Chief Press Secretary to the State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, the theme of the Summit holding between October 8 and 10, 2014 in Asaba, is “The new woman, winning in a man’s world”
In the statement, the governor said that the Nigerian woman has moved from being a voice in the kitchen and farm-support hand to being a force to be reckoned with in every sector of the economy while still holding the home front together and supporting her man.
According to him, the Nigerian woman has been tested and proved that she can be trusted with every socio-political responsibility and critical decision. The governor noted that the critical sectors President Goodluck Jonathan has appointed women to man has shown that Nigerian women have come into their own.
“There is no better time than now to celebrate the Nigerian woman and if the initiative to celebrate and encourage her is coming from a respected platform like The Sun newspaper, Delta State is happy and honoured to host this gathering”
“It is a laudable initiative and we are partnering with The Sun to show that our women are not only willing to take leadership roles but they are also determined to move the glass ceiling in spite of all odds, traditional beliefs have stacked against them for centuries. Mr President has given them great tasks and they have delivered,” said Uduaghan.
The governor said he was particularly encouraged to support the SWLS because it will bring women who are already in leadership positions together with women who are aspiring to be leaders, noting that the event would be a great opportunity to lay the foundation for even better involvement of women in leadership positions in Nigeria.
“The Sun has started a good thing and we hope it will keep the flag flying. This must not be allowed to be a one-off event because it has a potential to become big. We look forward to welcoming Nigerian women leaders and leaders-in-the-making to Delta as we promise them a rewarding time.”
