Delta State Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa has disclosed his administration commitment to empower 50 best graduating students in Agriculture from institution of Higher Learning in the state to become entrepreneurs.
Speaking recently during the 2nd Convocation Ceremony for 2013/14 grandaunts of Delta State Polytechnic Ozoro in lsoko North Local Government Area, the governor said that the programme would commence from January 2016 and would run all through his tenure in office.
According to him “This administration will establish 50 best graduating students in agriculture from institutions of higher learning in the state as from January 2016 after their youth service programme so that they will be entrepreneurs and employers of labour. We will be monitoring their progress.”
He commended the management of the institution for ensuring that about 28 courses have been accredited by the National Board for Technical Education stressing that polytechnics in the state should be restructured and refocused for appropriate specialization to complement the regular skills and training programmes of the institutions.
Senator Okowa advised the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to institute mechanism for effective monitoring and supervision of Polytechnics to advance in their respective areas of specialization
” NBTE should put the necessary machinery in motion for Nigeria Polytechnics to run Post Graduate Diploma and Master’s Degree programmes especially in their respective areas of specialization, this will help to elevate the status of polytechnics in the country”, Senator Okowa said.
He expressed satisfaction with the level of infrastructural development in the state adding that the management of the school has made judicious use of its internally generated revenue (IGR) for development.
“I am quite impressed with the level of development and effort put in by the Rector and his management. When a man dreams big and remain committed to the dream, nothing can stop the dream, it takes a man of courage to use IGR to start infrastructural projects like the ones in this school. ”
Governor Okowa advised the graduating students to be creative, optimistic, bold and embrace entrepreneurial spirit and make a difference in the society despite the economic challenge of youth unemployment in the country.
He disclosed that his administration was soon commence the payment of the 2013/14 bursary assuring that “Government is interested in making the payments but have not commenced payment because of the inconsistency in the list of beneficiaries
In a welcome address, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Jacob Oboreh appreciated government’s support for the school explaining that their vision was to make the polytechnic a world class institution.
He explained that the institution was faced with the challenge of teaching staff and solicited the support of government to this effect.

Meanwhile, the Delta State Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa at the weekend commissioned various projects at Delta State Polytechnic Ozoro with a charge to Governing Councils of all state tertiary institutions to judiciously use their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for infrastructural development.
The governor gave this charge when he commissioned The school senior staff club, Information and communication technology centre (ICT), Engineering Laboratory, Library Extension, New Administrative Complex, Centre For Entrepreneurial Development, Departmental Offices/ Management and Technology Lecture theatres and an inspection of on-going construction work at the 10,000 sitting capacity stadium as part of the activities making the 2013/2014 Convocation ceremony of the Polytechnic.
He commended the Rector and Management of the polytechnic for being pro-active, transparent and accountable in the use of IGR for the development of the school.
“l encourage this great feat, the projects on ground in this school shows that you and your management are working and that you are focused.” He noted.
Senator Okowa said that he was overwhelmed with the work the school management has done without government financial support saying ” The Rector made me to understand that the stadium still under construction would be completed with about 400 million naira, this man need to be encouraged, the state government will support you with the sum of 100 million naira grant to complete the project.”
He advised the management to continue to co-operate with the governing council to promote development and attract more dividends of democracy to the school.
Okowa Lauds 2014 NYSC Presidential Award Recipients.
Delta State Governor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa has lauded the outstanding achievements of the 2014 National Youths Service Corps [NYSC] Presidential Award Recipients on community development and youth empowerment programmes from the state.
Speaking when the recipients paid him a courtesy call in Asaba, Governor Okowa, represented by the Chief of Staff, Government House, Hon. Tam Brisibe, stated that the state was proud to have over 8 Deltans as recipients of the award.
“Getting the Presidential award is something that is done yearly and not all states have candidates that are awarded but for 8 of you to be nominated and given the awards shows first of all your commitment to the national service that you went for and you definitely have been good ambassadors of Delta state”, the governor said, adding “on behalf of the people of Delta state, I would like to let you know that we are very proud of what you have done and what you have achieved”.
He promised that the state government would in due course honour their achievements as Deltans and partner with them in youth empowerment programmes.
Speaking on behalf of the award recipients Miss Tosan Obodiwe stated that the purpose of their visit was to foster a partnership with the state government on youth empowerment projects as well as community development and healthcare schemes.
“As Deltans who have excelled in our various fields we would like an opportunity to be role models to the youths by partnering with the state government on multiple youth empowerment programmes and develop our communities by engaging in various developmental projects”.
