Nigeria to spend N70m for Independence Anniversary

N70 million has been budgeted for this year’s Independence Anniversary celebration, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, announced on Tuesday.
The events marking the celebration would be low keyed, owing to the prevailing economic constraints, Lawal told reporters on Tuesday.
The independence anniversary would kick start with Jummat prayers on Friday 25 September, at the National Mosque, Abuja, followed by interdenominational thanksgiving service on Sunday 27th September, at the National Christian Worship Centre, followed by ceremonial change of guards on 1st October,2015 at the Presidential Villa.
President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to address the nation on 1st of October 2015 by 7am, according to the programme outlined by the organising committee.
Children’s party which will be the last event of the anniversary will be held on Saturday,3rd October at the state house conference centre.
Permanent Secretary, (Political Office) Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Ibukun Odusote who represented the SGF at a media briefing in Abuja, said government has adopted a general policy to be very prudent in the management of its financial resources.
The SGF said rather than roll out the drums in celebration of the anniversary, Nigerians should see it as an opportunity for deep and sober reflection to work together to return the country to prosperity.
“Let me emphasize, that this year’s celebration is indeed low-key. This is because the present administration appreciates the economic hardship that Nigerians and indeed the nation is confronted with today.
“To address the situation, government has adopted a general policy to be very prudent in the management of our financial resources. This year’s celebration is therefore,in consonance with the cost saving policy direction of this administration,”he emphasised.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan had after the bogus 50th anniversary celebration at the eagle square, kick-started the low key Programme at the fore court of his office in the State House, Abuja. This ran from 2011 till he left office.
