JOHESU Officials Evict Patients, Doctors From Eku Government Hosptal

EKU/Nigeria: There was mild drama in Eku, on Thursday, May 10, 2018 as some health workers under the Delta State Chapter of  Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU), besieged Eku Government Hospital, Eku, evicted patients and put the hospital under lock and key.
Our correspondent gathered the members of the union, drove to the hospital in a White Bus and ordered health workers from attending to patients.
According to the reports that the patients and some of their family members who had come to visit their loved ones were evicted from the hospital as they watched helplessly despite their pleas to the union members.
A source close to the hospital management, who craved anonymity, told our correspondent that members of union besieged the hospital in the afternoon and evicted patients and doctors in compliance to the strike called upon by the national body of JOHESU.
The source said: “The task force members of the Union came into Eku this afternoon and threw all our patients out. Even patients that cannot even walk were also thrown out of their wards before locking the hospital.”
Another source argued that the strike is not supposed to affect medical doctors, adding that if other workers were on strike, “How would they lock a government owned hospital? Is it the union that owns the hospital or the Delta State Government?
“It is unthinkable. They locked both doctors and patients outside the hospital without regard for human lives. These are patients who are in critical health conditions. In fact, one of the patients was brought in here last week from Delta State University Teaching Hospital and could not walk. There are some of them here who are homeless. This is unfortunate.”
” The man is a man in a very critical condition. His wife is in Orogun and now the man is left here helpless, who will care for the man before his wife gets here? Is there even money for her to transport to this place considering the short notice as the man is a security man before this condition.”
Recall that on Wednesday the National Chairman of JOHESU, Biobelemoye Josiah, during a press conference, called on their colleagues in the state and local government hospitals to join the nationwide strike embarked upon by the union on April 18.
He said the call had become necessary due to the Federal Government’s inaction since the strike began about three weeks ago.
