The Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has urged Governors in the Southern States of the Country to expedite action on the ban on Open Grazing in the region through a Bill to the various State Houses of Assembly for prompt legislative action.
Oborevwori who is the National Deputy Chairman, Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria made the call today while speaking on the African Independent Television, (AIT), on the South Governors’ position on open Grazing in the region.
The Speaker, while commending the Governors for what he described as their patriotic and timely intervention in relation to the challenge orchestrated through Open Grazing, said that the State Houses of Assembly in the region will continue to throw their weight behind the Governors ban on Open Grazing in the area.
He, however enjoined the Governors to expedite action on their pronouncement by proposing a Bill in that regard to their various Houses of Assembly in order to give the ban on open grazing some legal backings.
He assured that as soon as the Governors come up with the Bill, the State Houses of Assembly will also, expedite legislative action in order to ensure that the Bill is passed into law.
His words, “The issue of restructuring is no longer new in this country.
“The decision of the Southern Governors on the issue of open Grazing in the region is indeed a welcomed development as it is also in the right direction
“We will continue to support them just as we have urged them to come out with Bills on open Grazing so that we in the State Houses of Assembly can see how we can pass the bill into law in order to give it a legal backing.
“We are all aware that some states in the country have since passed the Bill on Open Grazing into Law in their various States. Here in the South as soon as the Governors come up with the Bill, we will work on it” Oborevwori said.
According to the Speaker, the Houses of Assembly, especially that of Delta State is waiting for the ongoing strike by the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, PASAN, to be called off to receive the bill in the House from the Delta State Governor, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, as the process of passing a Bill on banning Open grazing is already ongoing.
“We are waiting for the ongoing strike by the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, PASAN to be called off to receive the Bill from the Executive in Delta State. The process is already on.” He said.
