ASABA/Nigeria: The need for patents, governments, and relevant institutions in the society to accord priority attention to the rights and wellbeing of every girl child has been brought to the fore.
The Founder, Monu Olarewaju Foundation, Hon. (Chief) Chinwe Monu Olaruwaju made the call in Asaba on the occasion of the 2022 International Day of the girl child with the theme: Our Time is Now ; Our Rights, Our Future.
Chief Monu -Olarewaju, who specifically urged parents to shun discrimination of their female children, emphasised the strong need for them to take adequate care in order not to regret but reap the benefits in the nearest future.
She noted that her foundation was established to provide the needed assistance to the girl child to enable them unleash their potentials in life.
She said that the International Day of the Girl Child was set aside by the United Nations to create awareness and enlighten the global populace, especially patents to protect their girl child from violent abuse.
Hon. Chief Monu Olarewaju, a former House of Assembly member for Oshimili South, said that every female child should have equal opportunity to access education with their male counterpart , adding that denying them access to education was a condemnable act that should be jettisoned.
She stated that children should be aware of the importance of the Child Rights Day, adding that there was so much societal issues and harmful practices against the girl child.
She lauded UN for the global awareness on the issues that had to do with the plights of the girl child, adding that her foundation had been contributing to the wellbeing of the girl child in the area of empowerment and educational upliftment.
While identifying early marriage, sexual harrassment and female genital mutilation as some of the unpleasant traditional practices that had militated against the girl child, Hon. Olarewaju enjoined the girl child to always speak out whenever their rights were being infringed upon.
Highpoint of the ceremony was the presentation of educational materials to the children by the Founder of Monu Olarewaju Foundation, Hon. Monu Olarewaju.
