SAPELE/Nigeria: Six people were tragically killed in Sapele when a truck carrying sugarcane overturned at the Amukpe roundabout due to a failed portion of the road. The victims, who were initially inside the truck, had attempted to jump out to escape the impending accident. Unfortunately, the truck tipped over onto the same side they had jumped to, crushing them to death.
Eyewitnesses described the harrowing scene, expressing shock and sorrow at the loss of life. “They tried to escape, but the truck fell right on top of them,” one witness recounted.
Residents of Sapele have expressed growing concerns over the dangerous condition of the Amukpe roundabout, which they believe contributed to this fatal accident. The incident has intensified calls for immediate government intervention to repair the road and prevent further tragedies.
Fabian Otolo, a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, highlighted the frequent accidents at the site, noting that while many have occurred, this was the first to result in fatalities. “Accidents happen at that spot almost every day, but we’ve never had deaths like this,” Otolo stated. “The government needs to act quickly before more lives are lost.”
The community is urging authorities to address the hazardous road conditions at the Amukpe roundabout to ensure the safety of all road users.
