ASABA/Nigeria: The Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge, SAN, has commended the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Alumni Association for sustaining the legacy of academic excellence, urging members to continue to project the institution as the best Nigeria has to offer.
Prof. Azinge gave the commendation on Thursday when he received members of the Asaba Chapter of the UNILAG Alumni Association at his palace in Asaba during a courtesy visit led by the Chapter President, Mr. Patrick Olisa Dibie.
Welcoming the delegation, the monarch described the visit as symbolic and timely. He encouraged the alumni to reflect the values of the university in their service to society. “Let the world see the worth of our training. Let the world proclaim that yes, going to UNILAG is indeed going to the best university that Nigeria can offer,” the Asagba said.
In his remarks, Mr. Dibie apologized for the delay in the courtesy call and appealed to the royal father to extend to the Asaba Chapter of the Alumni Association the same goodwill he had shown in his distinguished career. “Your Majesty, we are proud to call you one of us. We humbly ask that you do for the Asaba Chapter of UNILAG Alumni what you have so generously done for the legal profession, the Church, the Commonwealth and Saint Patrick’s College. We believe your blessings will strengthen us as we continue to contribute to the growth of our community and our alma mater,” he said.

On behalf of the delegation, Rt. Hon. Ovie Agas presented gifts to the monarch along with a letter of invitation from the national body of the association, formally inviting the Asagba to Lagos on October 12, 2025, to receive a national award.
Responding, Prof. Azinge praised the gesture and reaffirmed Asaba’s reputation as a city of peace and prosperity. “We beat our chests with a lot of pride that we are the custodians here in Asaba, the fastest growing city capital, not just in Nigeria, in Africa south of the Sahara. Asaba land blesses people, and it is that blessing I am bestowing upon all of you,” he declared.
