Urhobo College’s Zenith Cup Triumph Excites Ighrakpata, Ekedayen

Solomon Ighrakpata, and the State Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr. Sonny Ekedayen, have congratulated Urhobo College, Effurun, on its remarkable victory as the overall winner of the 2025 Zenith Bank/Delta State Principal’s Cup.

Both Ighrakpata and Ekedayen, proud alumni of the school located in Uvwie Local Government Area, described the triumph as a moment of pride not only for their alma mater but also for the entire Urhobo nation. Urhobo College defeated Ogbe-Ijaw Grammar School, Ogbe-Ijaw, in Warri South West Local Government Area, 2–1 in a thrilling final match played at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.

Speaking shortly after the finals, Hon. Ighrakpata, a two-term member of the Delta State House of Assembly who represented Uvwie Constituency, said the victory reflected the school’s enduring tradition of discipline, excellence, and determination.

“As a proud old boy of Urhobo College, I am elated by this outstanding performance. This victory is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and teamwork of the students, teachers, and coaches,” he said.

He lauded the team for demonstrating talent and character, noting that the win symbolized more than just sporting success but also the college’s commitment to grooming well-rounded individuals.

“This win is not just about football—it’s a reflection of the college’s values and its focus on nurturing balanced, confident, and resilient young people,” Ighrakpata stated.

While celebrating the school’s achievement, the IRS boss also encouraged the students to remain committed to their studies, emphasizing the need to maintain balance between academics and sports.

“As you celebrate this well-deserved victory, I urge you to continue striving for academic excellence. A true champion succeeds both on the field and in the classroom,” he advised.

In his own remarks, Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr. Sonny Ekedayen, praised the young players for their skill and determination, which he said earned them the coveted trophy.

“Your performance on the field was inspiring. Build on this momentum, keep working hard, and aim even higher in future competitions,” Ekedayen said.

He urged the students to let their victory serve as motivation to excel in all aspects of life, reminding them that discipline, teamwork, and resilience are essential qualities for lasting success.

“Let this triumph propel you to greater heights in your academic and personal journeys. Always uphold the values that have brought you this far,” he added.

Both Ighrakpata and Ekedayen commended the Delta State Government and Zenith Bank Plc for their consistent support in organizing the annual competition, which they described as a vital platform for youth development and talent discovery in the state.

The duo expressed optimism that the championship would continue to inspire excellence among Delta youths while promoting unity and sportsmanship across communities.
