LAGOS/Nigeria: The Lagos State Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JNC), Trade Union Side, has assured public servants of the safety and protection of their retirement benefits, amid concerns over pension remittances in the state.
The assurance was given by the Chairman of JNC, Micheal Domingo, during a strategic engagement with the management of the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC).
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Domingo said the meeting was convened in response to complaints by workers over delays in pension remittances by some Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs). He said the council had resolved to intensify monitoring of pension-related matters to safeguard the interests of public servants.
According to him, the JNC would remain proactive in ensuring that pension deductions are properly remitted and that workers’ future retirement security is not compromised.
Domingo urged public servants to remain calm, vigilant and well-informed, assuring them that the council would continue to defend both their current service conditions and post-retirement welfare.
He also commended LASPEC for its openness to dialogue and the introduction of quarterly stakeholders’ meetings, describing the initiative as a positive step towards resolving pension-related challenges through sustained engagement.
Responding, the Director-General of LASPEC, Babalola Obilana, assured that the Lagos State Government was fully up to date with pension remittances.
Obilana explained that earlier challenges were linked to temporary administrative and policy adjustments by the National Pension Commission (PENCOM), adding that the issues had since been resolved.
He further assured that workers retiring at this period, who had completed the required documentation, would receive their benefits promptly.
The LASPEC Director-General also advised workers to regularly check their payslips to ensure accurate pension deductions and promptly report any discrepancies for immediate action.
