PORT HARCOURT/Nigeria: Governor Siminalayi Fubara has said his decision to adopt what critics interpret as political “weakness” was a deliberate strategy aimed at preserving peace and stability in Rivers State amid prolonged tensions in the state’s political landscape.
Speaking in Lagos on February 13, 2026, while receiving the New Telegraph Man of the Year Award, the governor dedicated the honour to God, the people of Rivers State and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, whom he described as the political figure who discovered and elevated him.
Fubara explained that his posture had been a conscious sacrifice made in the broader interest of the state and the country, noting that what some perceive as weakness should instead be understood as restraint for peace. He said those who believed in him had shared in his political trials and that his actions were guided by the desire to safeguard stability and protect collective interests.
He added that interpretations of his approach may differ but insisted on publicly acknowledging Wike’s influence on his political journey, saying the former Rivers governor’s support played a defining role in his rise to prominence. The governor also extended the dedication to his family and residents of the state, commending them for their patience and composure despite political challenges.
Expressing appreciation to New Telegraph for the recognition, Fubara said he was honoured to be counted among Nigerians considered worthy of distinction in a country of over 200 million people.
At the ceremony, former Ogun State governor Olusegun Osoba praised Fubara and other awardees for their contributions to national development. Chairman and Publisher of New Telegraph, Orji Uzor Kalu, said recipients were selected strictly on merit, emphasising that the awards were based on measurable contributions rather than partisan considerations.
Kalu noted that the recognition was intended to encourage honourees to deepen their service to humanity and sustain their commitment to Nigeria’s development. Fubara attended the event alongside a large delegation of Rivers elders, political leaders and supporters.
