OBI-ILOH/Nigeria: A fresh kidnap attempt was on Monday night foiled in Obi-Iloh community, Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State, following the swift intervention of vigilant residents who raised an alarm and mobilised members of the community against the suspected kidnappers.
The incident occurred barely days after the same Obi-Iloh community witnessed the abduction of two brothers who were later released after a ransom was reportedly paid. The latest development has further heightened concerns over the rising cases of kidnapping and insecurity across communities in Ukwuani Local Government Area.
Reports reaching Ndokwa Reporters indicate that the suspected kidnappers had invaded Obi-Iloh with the intention of abducting some residents when alert members of the community noticed their activities and immediately raised an alarm. The alarm attracted scores of residents, prompting the suspects to abandon their mission and flee the scene.
In the ensuing confusion, one of the suspected kidnappers was apprehended by community members, while others reportedly escaped into nearby bushes. The suspect was subsequently handed over to security operatives for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Residents recalled previous kidnapping incidents in Obi-Iloh, Obi-Ukwuole and Obinomba communities, all in Ukwuani Local Government Area, where several persons were abducted by criminal elements. They expressed concern that the recurring attacks were creating fear among residents and threatening economic and social activities in the area.
Community leaders have commended the courage and vigilance displayed by residents in foiling the latest attack, stressing that collective action and timely information-sharing remain crucial in combating criminal activities. They, however, urged the Delta State Government and security agencies to strengthen security presence in the area and intensify efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
As of the time of filing this report, security authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident, while investigations are said to be ongoing.
