ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Government is set to review its approach to funding teacher education and identify areas requiring additional intervention, Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme has said.
Onyeme made this known on Thursday in Asaba while receiving a delegation from the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), led by its Executive Secretary, Dr Angela Ajala, during a courtesy visit.
He said the state government would examine existing strategies for supporting teacher education, particularly in areas where funding gaps could affect the quality and effectiveness of the sector.
The Deputy Governor said the government’s position was consistent with its broader approach to education, noting that Delta had a wide network of educational institutions and had continued to promote learning across the state.
“Regarding funding, your advice that government must be particularly intentional about funding teacher education is well taken; we will examine our current strategies, identify existing gaps, and see where further improvements can be made,” Onyeme said.
He explained that the decision to separate the former Ministry of Education into ministries responsible for higher, primary, secondary and technical education was intended to give greater focus to the different levels of the education system.
According to him, the restructuring would allow each area to receive more specialised administrative attention rather than having the entire education sector managed under a single ministry.
Onyeme said Delta was recognised for its educational capacity, adding that the state had continued to produce graduates and professionals who contribute to development within Nigeria and outside the country.
He assured the NCCE that the state government would work with the commission to address gaps identified in teacher education and other areas of the education sector.
Earlier, Ajala commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration for what she described as its interventions in the education sector.
The NCCE delegation included the Provost of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Asaba, Dr James Azuka Oliseh; Provost of the College of Education, Warri, Dr Fidelia Ighrakpata; and Provost of the College of Education, Ekiadolor, Benin City, Dr Lawrence Osagiede, among others.
The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration between the state government and the NCCE, particularly around teacher education and efforts to address identified challenges within the sector.
