ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) is set to bring together media practitioners, government officials, political leaders, security agencies, academics and business stakeholders in Asaba for a broad-based conversation on the state of democracy and the responsibilities of the media in Nigeria.
The forum’s 2026 Annual Conference and 6th Lecture Series will hold on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at David’s Event Centre, GRA, Asaba, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
With the theme, “Democracy Under Pressure: Electoral Integrity, Security Challenges and Media Accountability in Nigeria,” the conference is expected to examine some of the issues increasingly shaping Nigeria’s democratic and information environment.
Chairman of the 2026 Annual Conference and 6th Lecture Series Planning Committee, Dn. Chijioke Williams Ugbolue, and the Secretary, Comrade Josephine Omodior, said the theme was designed to encourage serious discussion on the pressures confronting democratic institutions and the role of different stakeholders in addressing them.
The organisers said the conference would place particular attention on electoral integrity, security concerns and the responsibilities of journalists and media organisations in an era where information travels rapidly through digital platforms.
They noted that the expansion of online media had significantly changed the way citizens receive and respond to political and public-interest information, making accuracy, verification, professional ethics and responsible reporting increasingly important.
According to the committee, participants will also examine the impact of misinformation and disinformation on public confidence, political communication, electoral processes and the relationship between citizens, institutions and the media.
The safety of journalists is expected to form part of the discussions, particularly against the background of the increasingly complex operating environment confronting media practitioners covering elections, political activities, security incidents and other sensitive issues.
The organisers said preparations were already underway for what they described as a major gathering of online publishers and journalists in Delta State, with invitations extended to representatives of government, political institutions, the legislature, security agencies, academia and the business community.
Expected institutional participants include the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), other security agencies and the country’s electoral management body.
The Planning Committee said bringing the different sectors together was intended to broaden the conversation beyond the media profession and allow the conference theme to be examined from political, security, academic, institutional and professional perspectives.
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Oborevwori, is expected at the event as Special Guest of Honour.
A professional and politician is also scheduled to chair the occasion, while the committee said a prominent academic had been selected as Distinguished Guest Lecturer for the 6th Annual Lecture. The organisers have not, however, disclosed their names in the announcement.
For DOPF, the conference is part of its continuing engagement with issues surrounding professional journalism, public accountability, democratic governance, security and development.
The forum has previously used its activities to bring media practitioners and other stakeholders together on matters considered important to the development and stability of Delta State and the wider society.
The 2026 gathering is therefore being positioned as more than a routine annual media event, with the organisers seeking to create space for direct interaction among those who influence, report on and are affected by Nigeria’s democratic and security environment.
The Planning Committee said it expects the discussions to deepen understanding of the pressures facing democratic institutions, strengthen attention to electoral credibility and reinforce the need for responsible and accountable journalism.
The event will also provide an opportunity for stakeholders to examine how the media can contribute to informed public discourse while maintaining professional standards in an environment increasingly influenced by digital communication.
