ASABA/Nigeria: Former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly and Delta North senatorial candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rt. Hon. (Engr.) Victor O. Ochei, has described the late Professor Kamene Okonjo as an enduring example of academic excellence, purposeful living and the advancement of women.

Ochei, in a condolence message following the death of the 96-year-old scholar, extended his sympathies to the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family of Ogwashi-Uku, the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku, HRM Obi (Dr.) Ifechukwude Anishi Okonjo II, the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and other members of the Okonjo family.

He said Professor Okonjo’s life demonstrated how education, personal discipline and a commitment to service could shape families and leave a lasting influence on society.

The late professor was a renowned sociologist and advocate for women’s rights. She was married to the late Obi (Professor) Chukwuka Okonjo for 66 years and was a respected figure within the Ogwashi-Uku royal family.

Ochei particularly drew attention to the values she imparted to her children, noting that the international accomplishments of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala reflected the importance of parental guidance in shaping character and preparing individuals for leadership.

“The achievements of Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala remind us of the enduring influence of a mother’s guidance and the values instilled at home. The discipline, courage, integrity and commitment to excellence that shape an individual’s life often begin with the lessons learnt from parents,” he said.

The former Speaker said the late professor’s significance went beyond her academic achievements, arguing that her dedication to women’s advancement and the values she upheld in family life provided lessons for younger generations.

He maintained that her example should encourage girls and women to pursue education, develop their abilities and seek opportunities to contribute meaningfully to their communities and the wider society.

“Professor Kamene Okonjo is herself a role model for young girls and women. Her life demonstrates the importance of education, purposeful living, service to humanity and the courage to make a difference. These are virtues that generations of women can emulate,” Ochei added.

He expressed hope that her contributions to scholarship and the promotion of women’s rights would continue to inspire those working to expand opportunities for women in education, leadership, public service and other professional fields.

Ochei prayed for the peaceful repose of the late professor’s soul and asked God to grant the Okonjo family, the people of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom and others mourning her death the strength to bear the loss.

He said the values associated with her life and work would remain a source of inspiration long after her passing.
