ASABA/Nigeria: Senator Prince Ned Nwoko, representing the Delta North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has expressed his honour in presenting a bill aimed at establishing Anioma State.
This initiative, he asserts, addresses a long-standing historical oversight within Nigeria, aiming to rectify years of marginalisation faced by the Anioma people. The announcement was made through a statement from his media support group, the Senator Ned Nwoko Feedback Lead Admins.
Nwoko outlined the impressive profile of Anioma, which comprises nine local government areas. He highlighted the region’s rich natural resources, particularly noting that six of these areas are endowed with significant oil and gas reserves.
According to him, these resources provide a robust economic foundation, complemented by Anioma’s vibrant, skilled, and educated population. “These factors make Anioma not just deserving of statehood but also an attractive prospect for development,” he emphasised.
The senator’s initiative has received widespread backing from various stakeholders. Advocacy groups, including the Anioma Socio-Cultural Group and Izu Anioma, have been vocal supporters of the proposed state. Additionally, prominent organisations such as the Pan Igbo Cultural Organisation and Ohanaeze Ndi-Igbo have also extended their support, signalling a united front for the creation of Anioma State.
Traditional rulers, led by the late Asagba of Asaba, Obi (Prof.) Chike Edozie, have consistently championed the cause, further solidifying the movement’s legitimacy. Numerous meetings have taken place, including discussions with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, to build consensus around this critical initiative. Advocates maintain that the establishment of Anioma State is essential for achieving justice and equity in the region.
Proponents argue that creating Anioma State will enhance political representation, allowing for a stronger voice in the Senate, House of Representatives, and full representation in the State Assembly.
Moreover, it is believed that statehood will unlock the region’s economic potential through targeted development initiatives, fostering growth and prosperity for the Anioma people. As discussions progress, the call for statehood continues to gain momentum, reflecting the aspirations of a community seeking recognition and advancement.
