ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Commissioner for Water Resources Development, Rt. Hon. Martin Okonta has announced plans by his ministry to carry out aggressive advocacy to sensitize residents to shun open defecation in the state.
Rt. Hon. Okonta, stated this in Asaba when the Committee of Friends International (COFI) paid him a courtesy visit to present him with an award of recognition for his contributions to the society.
Hon. Okonta stated that such initiative was in compliance with the USAID, UNICEF and the European Union’s intervention approach towards ensuring potable water supply, sanitation and hygiene in the state.
He said that Governor Ifeanyi Okowa was irrevocably committed to ensuring that Deltans accessed clean water at all times, adding that with the passage of the water law and declaration of the state of emergency on water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), the yearnings of Deltans were being met.
While maintaining that the state government would improve on the existing water facilities in the state, the water resources commissioner said that it was gratifying to be humble, loyal and sincere at all times.
Rt. Hon. Okonta, who admonished his committee of friends to always embrace God, be united and advise their members on the need to contribute to humanity and development of the society, urged them to enlighten the people in their various communities to protect government properties.
Earlier, the Leader of the COFI, Mr Mike Okoh, stated that the presentation of the award of honour was in recognition of the commissioner’s modest contributions to humanity and governance, adding that the visit was also to congratulate him on his appointment as a commissioner.
Mr Okoh thanked the state governor for finding one of their own worthy to serve as commissioner for water resources development and commended him for the massive transformation of the State.
