ABUJA/Nigeria: The Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Distinguished Senator Ede Dafinone, has charged the newly elected leadership of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) to place unity, peace, and collective development at the centre of their agenda. He made the call at the 94th Urhobo Day Celebration held at Uvwiamuge, Agbarho, in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

Addressing participants at the event, Senator Dafinone congratulated the re-elected President-General of the UPU, Chief Ese Gam Owe, and members of his executive council, describing their renewed mandate as a clear vote of confidence from the Urhobo people. He urged the leadership to strengthen bonds across Urhoboland, promote harmony, and pursue initiatives that will uplift the socio-cultural and developmental outlook of the nation.

Dafinone, who has remained a strong advocate for the preservation of Urhobo culture and identity, reaffirmed his commitment to supporting programmes that promote the heritage of the people. He highlighted the annual Urhobo Language Competition, which he sponsors in honour of the late Senator Pius Ewherido, noting that the initiative continues to inspire younger generations to embrace and preserve their mother tongue.

Reflecting on the UPU’s 94-year trajectory, the senator commended the union’s legacy of courage, purposeful leadership, and unity. He emphasised that these values must continue to guide the organisation as it confronts contemporary challenges and explores new opportunities for growth.

This year’s celebration, themed “Awaken Urhobo Spirit for Unity,” drew stakeholders from various communities who reiterated their commitment to peace, cultural preservation, and collective progress. The 2025 Annual Congress, held alongside the event, also witnessed the dissolution of the outgoing executive and the election of new leaders, with Chief Owe’s re-emergence as President-General symbolising stability and continuity.

Participants expressed optimism that with united leadership and a collaborative approach, the Urhobo Nation is poised for greater development and a more prosperous future.
