ASABA/Nigeria: The Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, called upon the people of Delta to actively participate in endeavors that would fortify democracy and promote cohesion among citizens, thereby paving the way for the implementation of sustainable development initiatives.
Speaking at an inter-denominational thanksgiving service held at the Cathedral Church of St. Peters (Anglican Communion) in Bishop’s Court, Asaba, Oborevwori’s address commemorated the 32nd anniversary of the state’s establishment.
The Governor, represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, expressed his gratitude for the enduring support of the citizens, which has been instrumental not only during his tenure but also throughout the successive governments since the state’s inception on August 27, 1991. Governor Oborevwori highlighted the remarkable unity that has developed among the state’s populace over the 32 years, attributing this sense of unity to the support extended to his predecessors and his administration.
Oborevwori took a moment to acknowledge and pay tribute to the former leaders and civil servants who have played crucial roles in shaping the state’s progress. He articulated, “We have achieved significant progress in various aspects of life, and above all, we proudly identify ourselves as Deltans. Today, we stand more united than ever, and on behalf of all Deltans, we extend our gratitude to those who have contributed in diverse ways to our current state.”
The Governor underscored the importance of preserving democracy, noting, “Our celebrations should be accompanied by continued engagement in activities that deepen democratic principles, a form of governance that allows us to choose our leaders.” Oborevwori emphasized the efforts of his predecessors, acknowledging their contributions to the present state of Delta. He wished them good health and wisdom while expressing hope that their experience would continue to guide the state.
Gratitude was also extended to the region’s Royal Fathers for their role in maintaining peaceful environments for socio-economic development. Oborevwori emphasized the link between tranquility and progress, highlighting that development thrives in regions devoid of conflict.
Governor Oborevwori affirmed his administration’s commitment to executing developmental projects that positively impact citizens’ lives. He highlighted the progress already achieved since taking office on May 29, 2023, and expressed optimism about the forthcoming years. He urged Deltans both within the state and in the diaspora to continue contributing to the state’s growth and development.
The Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Asaba, Rt. Rev’d Kingsley Obuh, delivered a sermon in which he congratulated Governor Oborevwori on the state’s anniversary. He commended past leaders for their contributions and implored current leaders to ensure equitable distribution of democratic benefits. The Bishop also emphasized the importance of gratitude and unity, asserting that as long as the people praise and give thanks, the state would continue to prosper.
The thanksgiving service was graced by esteemed individuals, including the Deputy Governor’s wife, Mrs. Catherine Onyeme; the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor; Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Arthur Akpowowo; and former Deputy Governor, Sir Benjamin Elue. Dignitaries from various government bodies were also in attendance, reaffirming their collective commitment to Delta State’s growth and prosperity.
