UGHELLI/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has called on traditional rulers to place utmost importance on matters of security in their respective domains. The governor made this plea on Friday during the official presentation of the Staff of Office to His Royal Majesty, Simpson Sapele Obruche, Obruche 11, the Odion R’ode of Uwheru Kingdom, located in the Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.
Governor Oborevwori who was represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, assured the gathering that the administration would continue to hold traditional rulers in high esteem. The governor urged them to forge a close working relationship with law enforcement agencies and local government councils to ensure lasting peace and harmony in their domains.
Highlighting the importance of the traditional institution, Oborevwori stated, “The traditional institution remains a priceless legacy in any African society for which there is yet no credible substitute, serving as a unifying force for the people.”
He emphasised that traditional rulers should strive to enhance the sanctity of their office by leading their communities toward greater prosperity.
Furthermore, the governor called on these leaders to uphold values such as transparency, justice, fair play, and equity in all their interactions with the people.
He stressed, “In everything you do and in every decision that you take, I appeal to you to place the interest of the majority of your people and the fear of God above all other considerations.”
Governor Oborevwori also took the opportunity to address the youth, urging them to actively engage in productive activities. He emphasized that his administration would consistently prioritize education and provide the necessary support to foster youth development.
During the event, Hon. Esemeteye Benjamin, speaking on behalf of the Uwheru Traditional Council, expressed gratitude to Governor Oborevwori for presenting the Staff of Office to their traditional ruler.
On his part, Hon. Adode Godwin, Chairman of the Ughelli North Local Government Area, called on the youth to maintain peace within the kingdom and redirect their energy toward positive endeavors. He expressed concern over the relentless attacks by herdsmen in the region, deeming the situation unbearable, and called for immediate government intervention to curb the menace.
