
ABUJA/Nigeria: As Nigeria marked Democracy Day on Thursday, June 12, 2025, the immediate past Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, OON, called on citizens to remain steadfast in their belief in democratic governance, despite the nation’s current challenges.
In a statement commemorating the national holiday, Elumelu praised the courage and resilience of Nigerians in sustaining the democratic journey, describing democracy as a “priceless national possession” that must be defended and nurtured.
“As we mark this significant day, I urge all citizens to continue to have faith in our democracy and to remain committed to the ideals of democratic governance despite the challenges we are facing as a country,” Elumelu stated. “Our democracy is a product of the sacrifices of many, and I appreciate the leaders who fought hard and even paid the supreme sacrifice to bring about this precious gift.”
The former Minority Leader paid tribute to the late heroes and living champions of democracy, noting that their legacy serves as a beacon for continued commitment to justice, equity, and good governance.
Elumelu also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his Renewed Hope agenda, praising the leadership direction of the administration. He specifically lauded the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Oborevwori, for the implementation of his MORE Agenda, which he said was positively impacting lives across the state.
He extended his commendation to local government chairmen in his Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency for their people-centered approach to governance through impactful projects and grassroots development initiatives.
According to Elumelu, these leaders’ unwavering focus on the welfare of the people was evidence that the dividends of democracy can be achieved under the right leadership.
A widely respected democrat and advocate for people-oriented politics, Elumelu reiterated his dedication to public service guided by integrity and selfless commitment. He emphasized that the ultimate aim of democracy must be to deliver tangible benefits to the people.
“My belief that the people should be the true beneficiaries of democracy remains unshakable,” he affirmed.
