ASABA/Nigeria: Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Dr. Awoture Eleyae, a distinguished figure in the world of sports and former Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Sports in Africa. The renowned sports scholar and administrator, who hailed from Uzere in Isoko South Local Government Area of the state, passed away at the remarkable age of 96.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori hailed Dr. Awoture Eleyae as a paragon of excellence in the world of sports. His significant contributions to the growth and development of sports in Nigeria and Africa have left an indelible mark that will not be forgotten.
Governor Oborevwori specifically commended the late Dr. Eleyae for his instrumental role in fortifying the country’s sports administration. Notably, he designed and served as the first Principal of the National Institute for Sports (NIS) from 1975 to 1984. Dr. Awoture Eleyae’s achievements extended beyond national boundaries as well. He captained the Nigerian Basketball team to the inaugural All African Games in 1965 and served as the Athletics coach for several Olympic teams, earning respect and admiration in the global sports community.
Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Eleyae held prominent positions in the sports realm, including Acting Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Chairman of the Bendel State Sports Council, and Chairman of the National Sports Award Committee.
Governor Oborevwori conveyed his condolences on behalf of the Government and people of Delta State to the entire Eleyae family, the people of Uzere Kingdom, the Isoko nation, and the global sports community.
