IDUMUJE-UNOR/Nigeria: The quiet town of Idumuje-Unor in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State was enveloped in solemn celebration over the weekend as the Chiazor and Nwoko families laid to rest their revered matriarch, late Princess Mrs. Catherine Okwuobi Chiazor (née Nwoko), who passed away on March 27, 2025, in Arizona, United States, at the age of 92.
The funeral rites drew an impressive crowd of relatives, dignitaries, and friends from across Nigeria and beyond, all converging to honour the memory of a woman remembered for her grace, humility, and nurturing spirit. Princess Catherine, daughter of the late Obi Nkeze Nwoko II of Idumuje-Ugboko, was the widow of the late Chief Anthony Chiazor and a beacon of moral guidance to both the Nwoko and Chiazor families.
Among the dignitaries present was her nephew, Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, who represents Delta North Senatorial District in the National Assembly. In a moving tribute, Senator Nwoko described the late Princess not just as an aunt, but a matriarch who embodied the quiet strength and grace of her generation.
“She was composed, deeply nurturing, and held our families together with unwavering dignity,” Nwoko said. “She belonged to a generation of women whose value was not in words, but in the legacy of lives they shaped.”
A funeral Mass was held at Saint Matthew Catholic Church in Idumuje-Unor before her remains were laid to rest in her ancestral home at Idumuje-Ugboko.
Speaking on behalf of the family, her eldest son, Mr. Greg Sunny Chiazor, a renowned businessman, said his mother lived a devout Catholic life and instilled moral clarity in her children and all who came close to her. “She taught me to love and honour women, especially mothers. Her influence will remain deeply etched in our lives,” he said.
Late Princess Catherine is survived by five children, Mr. Greg Sunny Chiazor, Mrs. Pat Okwumabua, Chief (Mrs.) Obiageli Inuwa, Mrs. Nkechi Stella Adesina, and Mr. Francis Onweazu Chiazor, as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a wide circle of relatives and admirers who will continue to celebrate her life and memory.
