Guwor Backs Oborevwori as APC Leader in Delta, Dismisses Claims of Betrayal Over PDP Defection

ASABA/Nigeria: Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, has declared his full confidence in Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s leadership, affirming him as the new Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State following the mass defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking during a live television interview on Monday night, Guwor dismissed any suggestion of betrayal, stating that the decision to move to the APC was borne out of necessity due to the deep-seated crisis in the PDP at the national level.

The Speaker highlighted the unresolved leadership tussles within the PDP, including multiple court litigations and the party’s failure to conduct a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting for over a year. He specifically referenced the legal battle over the office of the National Secretary, which ended at the Supreme Court, as well as the controversial decision by PDP governors in Oyo State to remain a standalone entity.

“Nobody betrayed anybody,” Guwor asserted. “The PDP at the national level is plagued by litigation and lacks direction. The recent Supreme Court decision and the merger confusion only deepened the crisis. That’s why many of us took the bold step to move.”

When asked if the defection was motivated by personal ambition, Guwor insisted that the interests of Delta State remain paramount. He praised Governor Oborevwori’s leadership and performance, describing the state as a massive construction zone due to ongoing infrastructural development.

“The Governor has performed excellently well. There’s no need to fear the future. Delta is witnessing unprecedented development under his watch,” Guwor stated.

Describing the shift to the APC as a “necessary step,” the Speaker said the decision followed wide consultations and cuts across all levels of government and party structure in the state.

He revealed that the mass defection included the Governor, his deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, members of the National Assembly, the Delta State House of Assembly, all 25 local government chairmen, 500 councillors, and the entire PDP executive structure at the state, local government, and ward levels.

Guwor emphasized that there will be unity within the APC in Delta State as all stakeholders have agreed to rally behind Governor Oborevwori ahead of the 2027 elections.

“I have no doubt that His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, is capable of providing leadership in the APC. There will be no factions. There will be no multiplicity of interest in 2027,” he said.

He added that the state is now fully aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which complements Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda aimed at advancing development in Delta State.

“We will deliver for President Bola Tinubu. His Renewed Hope Agenda is in synergy with the MORE Agenda of our Governor,” Guwor affirmed.
