ASABA/Nigeria: As Nigerians celebrate 59th independence, Rev. Fr. Jude Iwediunor has urged political office holders to review their allowances to reflect the realities of the country.
In a sermon delivered on Sunday September 29, 2019 at the Catholic Church of the Ascension, Asaba, Fr. Iwediunor decried situation where political office holders live in affluence whereas, there is high level of poverty in the country.
According to him, despite the fact that they earn jumbo salaries, they have several allowances running into millions of naira.
Speaking on the topic, “The Sin Of Indifference”, the Priest made analogy to the Biblical case of the rich man and Lazarus noting that the rich man was indifferent to the plights of Lazarus despite living in affluence and having parties regularly.
“Indifference is a sin, it is the I don’t care attitude; in other words, I don’t care attitude is a sin; wetin concern me? Is one of the greatest problem facing the world today.
“The rich fool had several opportunities to assist Lazarus but he was technically blind to him,” the Priest said.
He continued, “we should count our blessings; when you look at those who are poor around you, you will be touched to ask, what will I do to assist?”
“God hates wastefulness; in as much that riches are from God, He hates wastefulness; Jesus asked His disciples to gather remnants; rather than go for that expensive item, go for a cheaper one that will serve the same purpose and use the remnant to assist the needy.
“Where are your leftovers? Be good to people, especially those who are not in positions to pay you back; if you don’t recognise Jesus in the poor, you will not recognise Jesus when you see Him.
“There are so many ills in the society; some of the things we consider as normal are abnormal ; there is need for you to continuously seek the face of God through prayers; there are certain things that are not expected of us as children of God; you must recognise the presence of God, you must have love for God.”
