Nwoko Urges Federal Government to Secure Economic Independence for Nigerians at 64th Independence Anniversary

ABUJA/Nigeria: Senator Ned Nwoko has urged the federal government and fellow legislators to take decisive steps to ensure that Nigerians benefit from the true dividends of independence. He made this call in his Independence Day message released in Abuja today.

The senator stressed that genuine independence for Nigerians must free them from the constraints of dependency, hunger, and poverty. He further urged the government to stop using the US dollar for selling crude oil to Dangote Refinery and for paying foreign professionals, highlighting that it compromises national interest and security by creating a dual currency system.

Senator Nwoko commended the federal government’s recent steps to sell crude oil in naira to Dangote and other local refineries. He also called for all domiciliary accounts in Nigeria to be converted into naira to prevent their use as conduits for speculative activities.

In his message, Nwoko advocated for the establishment of a national social security agency to replace the current Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, suggesting that this new agency would more effectively support vulnerable Nigerians.

On the international front, Senator Nwoko renewed his call for reparations from Europe to Africa for historical injustices, and urged for the next Secretary-General of the Commonwealth to be from Africa.
