ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on Nigerians to refrain from inflammatory remarks and divisive tendencies to foster sustainable peace, unity, and development in honor of the sacrifices made by the nation’s fallen heroes.
The governor made the appeal during a special interdenominational thanksgiving mass held at Emmanuel The Saviour Catholic Church, Asaba, to mark the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration. Represented by his deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, Oborevwori emphasized the importance of emulating the selflessness and commitment of the nation’s fallen heroes while promoting peace, unity, and justice.
He urged prayers for global peace, particularly for the resolution of ongoing conflicts, including the Israel-Palestinian and Russia-Ukraine wars. Describing the remembrance day as a time for reflection on Nigeria’s past, present, and future, the governor lauded the bravery of those who paid the ultimate price to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty and unity.
Oborevwori stressed the need for year-round support for the legionnaires, their widows, and children, beyond the ceremonial observances. He reaffirmed the Delta State Government’s commitment to assisting the ex-servicemen and challenged them to embark on meaningful initiatives that would complement government efforts to improve their welfare.
He also urged public officeholders to lead with integrity and the fear of God to ensure decisions that promote good governance.
In his sermon, Monsignor John Aduba, Rector of Saint Joseph Pro Cathedral, Asaba, highlighted the selfless service of armed forces members, both serving and fallen. He called for increased attention to the families of fallen heroes, underscoring the importance of honoring their sacrifices.
The event featured Bible readings by Deputy Governor Onyeme and Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor. Service commanders, government officials, and legionnaires also participated in a special thanksgiving session.
The commemoration will conclude on Wednesday at the Cenotaph in Asaba, with a wreath-laying ceremony to honor the nation’s heroes.
