Oliego Secondary School Inspires Future Innovators with 2025 STEM Career Day in Umuseti

Students of Oliego Secondary School, Umuseti-Utagba Uno, dressed in various professional outfits representing doctors, engineers, nurses, scientists, and other STEM careers, pose with guests and facilitators during the 2025 STEM Career Day held at the school. The event, organised in collaboration with Bellark Polytechnic, Kwale, inspired students to pursue excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

OLIOGO/Nigeria: Oliego Secondary School has taken a bold step in advancing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education with the successful hosting of its 2025 STEM Career Day. The event drew students, educators, community leaders, and professionals from across the state, all united in their mission to inspire young minds toward impactful careers in STEM fields.

The atmosphere was charged with enthusiasm and community pride as seasoned professionals shared personal stories, career insights, and words of motivation designed to ignite a lifelong passion for innovation and problem-solving among the students.

In her opening remarks, the Principal of Oliego Secondary School reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of STEM leaders. She outlined her vision of transforming the school into a hub of excellence in science and technology education, calling for stronger partnerships with government agencies, private organisations, alumni, and the local community to sustain and expand the initiative.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of Dr Ernest Ogbedo, Dr Heelas Onah, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Delta, Agbor, spoke on the theme “STEM for a Better Future: Empowering Young Minds to Innovate and Lead.” He underscored the power of STEM education in shaping modern societies and urged students to be diligent, focused, and morally upright. “Integrity and hard work are the true foundations of success,” he said, warning against distractions such as internet fraud and other social vices.

The event featured several engaging career talk sessions that exposed students to practical STEM pathways. Engr (Mrs) Lilian Ngozi Adoh-Ogbuta, Deputy Director of Engineering at Ukwuani Local Government, encouraged female students to challenge gender stereotypes and pursue careers in engineering and technology with confidence. Mrs Angela Okonye, a lecturer at Dennis Osadebe University, Asaba, spoke on the importance of mathematics as the foundation of all STEM disciplines, advising students to conquer fear with consistent practice and dedication.

Dr Ayeni, Registrar of Bellark Polytechnic, Kwale, took participants through various STEM career opportunities and highlighted the institution’s role in nurturing technical talent. He presented STEM textbooks to the school and pledged continuous support in IT and technical skills development for students and teachers.

In his remarks, Mr Ojugbeli Wilson, Secretary of the Local Education Authority, Ndokwa West, lauded the initiative and advised students to seize the opportunity to broaden their knowledge, noting that earlier generations did not have access to such transformative learning experiences. He commended the organisers for exposing young people to the vast possibilities that STEM offers.

The event also featured a lively interactive session, where students engaged with speakers, asked insightful questions, and received mentorship. A colourful “career dress-up” activity saw students portraying doctors, engineers, scientists, and ICT professionals, giving them a chance to visualise their future ambitions. The day concluded with cultural dance performances that celebrated unity, learning, and local heritage.

The Royal Father of the Day, Chief Patrick Ogbedo, Onotu Ukwu of Umuseti, praised the school’s leadership for their vision and commitment to education. He urged students to remain steadfast in their studies, stressing that discipline and perseverance are key to achieving greatness. “There are no shortcuts to success,” he said, “education remains the surest path to a meaningful and rewarding future.”

Closing the ceremony, Dr Heelas Onah thanked all guests, speakers, and staff for their contributions to the event’s success. He particularly commended the school principal for her proactive leadership and acknowledged the teachers and NYSC members for their dedication to the students’ growth.

A major highlight of the day was the announcement of a ₦500,000 donation from Mr Chuks Ododo, aimed at providing new desks for the school. The contribution, raised during his birthday fundraiser, also included an additional ₦100,000 to support the organisation of the STEM Career Day. Mr Ododo, who initiated the STEM Career Day programme, collaborated closely with the Principal and Bellark Polytechnic, Kwale, to bring the vision to life.

The 2025 STEM Career Day at Oliego Secondary School marks a turning point for education in Ndokwa West, showcasing how collaboration between the community, academia, and local leadership can inspire innovation and excellence. The event not only celebrated learning but also set a new benchmark for nurturing creativity and ambition among young learners.
