Mr Chika Obanuchem, a member of the Democratic People Party DPP in ward 10 in Ukwuani L.G.A on March 14, 2014 moved to PDP.
The young, dynamic politician, who Hon (Dr.) Alphonsus Ojo, the member representing Ukwuani Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly described as an important win for PDP in Ukwuani, and the state, spoke to Ndokwa Reporters after the defection.
According to Hon. Chika Obanuchem, whose initial move from PDP to DPP was to attract development to Ukwuani L.G.A, especially his ward, ward 10 said that since that move, and the over whelming support for the opposition, the people of the area had being abandoned. He said those they looked up to head the fight derailed.
Speaking further, he said that the option was for him to move with the rest member of DPP to APC, but he took his time and decided to go back to PDP, which to him is a better option.
According to him, the essence of politics is development, and to him, development will come to the people from no other party, but PDP. He therefore called on other people, including his immediate leader, Chief Fidelis Okenmor Tilliji to join the PDP, especially with the fact that the main people who left the party in the local area is back to PDP. To him, and his followers, the best party in the area is the PDP. The party is now better positioned. It is the main party that cannot be beaten.
On development and employment he said that ward 10 was abandoned because of no force and proper representation. He therefore believes that his moving to PDP will help him to agitate and get attention to the area. According to him, PDP is not a bad party, PDP is now well organized he concluded.
On the defection of Mr Chika Obanuchem back to the PDP, Hon Ojo says that PDP in Ukwuani is regaining its place, and move of such defected old members and new members is expected. Hon Ojo described the move as a plus to PDP, which is the dominant party in the state and the best organized political party in the country.
Also speaking, on the defection, Chief J.J Esegbue a retired principal & politician said it was a welcome decision and being a grassroot politician, Mr Obanuchem will be more relevant in PDP than DPP or any other party. To him, the so called massive registration by APC was all, but a deception.
Chief Esegbue pointed out that often, the Ukwuani people have never had a common front of their own, but rather front for other peoples thus depriving them of a political base. He decried the attitude of people coming out individually to context for the same position, with people from other areas as bad. He therefore called for proper orientation to politics and power, especially, one of the pitfalls of Ukwuani politics, worshiping of the wealthy.
