ASABA/Nigeria: The need for students to be committed to their studies, shun social vices and embrace things that could impact positively on their lives and the society at large has been stressed.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Sir Augustine Oghoro (JP) , stated this at the Government Model Secondary School, Asaba while declaring open the second edition of the Mentorship programme being organized simultaneously in public secondary schools across the state .
Sir Oghoro, who said that it was important for all stakeholders to contribute meaningfully towards mindset reorientation of students, noted that they needed to be guided properly in order for them to be successful in life.
The Basic and Secondary Education Permanent Secretary, who identified lack of determination, laziness and poor reading culture among students as some of the problems militating against them , just as he called for all hands to be on deck in addressing the challenges.
Sir Oghoro advised them to aspire for greatness and obey simple instructions from their teachers and elders, adding that there was no success without hard work.
Earlier, the Director of Schools, Mrs. Clementina Ojumah, who urged the students to desist from cultism, indiscipline and prostitution, enjoined them to show love to their fellow students and respect their teachers , just as she noted that the teachers were always there to help them at all times.
She advised students not to succumb to peer influence and pressure in any negative activities, saying that guidance and counselling teachers should always guide the students aright.
Speaking to the students on measures to curb the menace of indiscipline and cultism in school, a Resource person, Mrs. Esther Obiesie emphasised the need for students to bring the best out of them through commitment and embrace skills, even as she urged them abstain from things that could jeopardize their lives.
