ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Government has voiced its apprehension regarding the lack of cooperation from traders at the renowned Ogbeogonogo Market in Asaba, as construction progresses slowly on the multi-million naira Underground Storm Project, which runs through the market to the River Niger.
In an exclusive interview, the Commissioner for Works, Highway, and Urban Roads, Comrade Reuben Izeze, expressed frustration at the uncooperative attitude of the traders in the vicinity of the project site. The Ogbeogonogo Market, strategically located along Dennis Osadebay Way in Asaba, serves as a vital economic hub in the state capital, witnessing high foot traffic daily.

Commissioner Izeze stressed that the Underground Storm Project is an integral part of the state government’s comprehensive plan to mitigate flooding in the city during heavy rainfall. The project is designed to divert water from various areas, including Okpanam Road, Nnebuisi Road, Dennis Osadebay Way, and adjacent streets, into the River Niger.
However, Izeze criticized the traders for hindering the swift execution of the project by refusing to vacate the construction site temporarily. He emphasized that the presence of traders poses significant safety risks, particularly during heavy rains, with the potential for mudslides in the area.
Contrary to claims that the contractor is behind schedule, Commissioner Izeze clarified that progress on the project aligns with the established timeline. He urged the traders to cooperate and allow the contractor to work efficiently.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has expressed concern over the situation and called for the traders’ understanding, emphasizing the adage, “No Pain, No Gain.” Izeze acknowledged the difficulties faced by the traders but pointed out that development often entails inconvenience. Once completed, the project promises to provide the traders with a more conducive trading environment and safeguard the city from flooding.
The Commissioner disclosed that the project is expected to conclude within the next two months, reiterating the government’s unwavering commitment to providing a healthier living environment for Delta residents and the state’s residents at large.
The ongoing construction work has undeniably disrupted commercial activities at the market, prompting traders to appeal to the state government to expedite the project’s completion. While acknowledging the government’s efforts to address the flooding issue in Asaba, traders have expressed doubts about the contractor’s ability to finish the project promptly, citing minimal patronage and increasing hardships as excavation work continues in the area.
