ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural and Riverine Roads), Mr. Charles Aniagwu, has reaffirmed Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s unwavering dedication to completing ongoing infrastructure projects while embarking on new ones. Speaking during an inspection tour of ongoing and completed projects in the Ika North East Local Government Area of the State, Aniagwu emphasized the administration’s commitment to delivering quality infrastructure that aligns with the state’s development agenda.
The projects scrutinized during the inspection encompassed several vital roadways, including the Ute-Ogbeje – Otolokpo Road, Mission Road Akumazi-Umuocha, Ogboi – College Road Akumazi – Umuocha, Kingdom Hall / Obeh Road Umunede, Umunede – Owa-Alero Road, Umunede – Otolokpo Road, Ute-Okpu – Ute Enugu road, and Ute – Erumu – Idumesah Road.
Commending the diligent efforts of engineers in the Ministry and contractors, Aniagwu lauded their commitment to ensuring that project execution adhered to the specifications outlined in the Bill of Engineering Measurement. He also highlighted the inclusion of catch pits (borrow pits) in most road projects to manage water drainage and the importance of side drains, which, while costly, effectively protect the roads from damage.
“We are here on the directive of Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori to constantly interface with our contractors, and I am pleased that our engineers have also been on the ground to continuously supervise the work,” stated Aniagwu. “The reason is that we want to ensure that the work is being done according to specifications and that our designs are not compromised.”
Aniagwu emphasized the significance of these inspections in budget alignment, stating, “If we don’t do this, we may not know how to proceed with funding all these ongoing projects in 2024.” He underscored the importance of certifying work according to the 2023 budget provisions to avoid financial challenges in the subsequent year.
The Works Commissioner urged contractors to resume work as the rainy season recedes, particularly those who have completed the binder stage, emphasizing that timely project completion benefits both the state and its residents.
Expressing optimism in Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to completing ongoing projects, Aniagwu stated, “I am quite confident that with the enthusiasm that Governor Oborevwori has brought to bear in what we are doing, so much is going to be done in line with the M.O.R.E Agenda.”
On the recently completed 11.3km Ute-Okpu – Ute-Owerri – Ute-Enugu Road, Aniagwu expressed satisfaction with the work done by the contractor and revealed plans for its imminent inauguration. He noted that these road projects play a crucial role in connecting rural communities, facilitating the movement of people and agricultural produce to markets, and boosting local economies.
In conclusion, Aniagwu applauded the efforts of both past and present administrations for their commitment to infrastructural development, acknowledging the growth of indigenous capacity among contractors. He emphasized the need for continued vigilance in ensuring that work specifications align with the prescribed design, as outlined in the Bill of Engineering Measurement.
The ongoing inspection underscores Delta State’s dedication to enhancing infrastructure, promoting economic growth, and improving the overall quality of life for its citizens.
