AWKA/Nigeria: In a bid to intensify the battle against malaria, the Anambra State Government has positioned itself to be at the forefront of receiving the new R21/Matrix-Malaria vaccine. Dr. Afam Obidike, the state’s Commissioner for Health, revealed this during a press briefing commemorating World Malaria Day under the theme, “Accelerate the fight against malaria for a more equitable world.”
Represented by Dr. Afam Anaeme, Director of Public Health, Obidike emphasized Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s commitment to combating malaria in the state. He stated, “Gov. Chukwuma Soludo made a passionate appeal to stakeholders that Anambra state be one of the first states to have access to the vaccine.”
Highlighting the collaborative efforts with global health organizations, Obidike stated, “The World Health Organisation (WHO), Gavi, and partners are prepared to support Nigeria and other countries as they prepare to introduce the malaria vaccines.”
Acknowledging the state’s strides in malaria control, Obidike cited the distribution of 3.8 million mosquito nets in 2022 in partnership with Malaria Consortium, resulting in a significant increase in net usage. He added, “Anambra achieved a 93.6 per cent fever testing rate in the last quarter of 2023.”
While commending the contributions of WHO and Malaria Consortium, Dr. Bonos Mohammed, State Coordinator of WHO, pledged continued support to the state government in improving health indices.
