ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has sent a clear warning to members of his Executive Council, stating that only performance, not sycophancy or gossip will guarantee their continued stay in office.
Speaking on Monday during the inauguration of eight new four-bedroom duplexes at the Commissioners’ Quarters in Asaba, the governor said while he appreciated the loyalty and dedication of most of his appointees, he would not hesitate to sack any under-performing commissioner.
“There are a lot of rumours saying the Governor wants to dissolve the Exco. These people haven’t even heard from me. This just shows people like too much talk,” Oborevwori said. “If you are not performing, we will drop you. That will not affect others. If you are performing, you will stay. Like now, two or three people are not doing well. I told one of them today at the chapel, you are not doing well.”
The governor emphasized the need for initiative and visibility from commissioners, urging them to take ownership of their roles. “As a commissioner, we don’t see you. You must talk, carry your memo, and look for the Governor—the Governor will not come looking for you. You have to bring energy and initiative into your ministry,” he added.
He stressed that accountability would remain central to his administration’s governance style. “If there is a problem in any ministry, hold the commissioner responsible. Any ministry doing well shows that the commissioner is working,” Oborevwori declared.
On the newly inaugurated duplexes, the governor said the additional units were necessary to accommodate the growing number of commissioners, as only 22 residences existed previously. He noted the buildings as a demonstration of his administration’s commitment to the welfare of top government officials.
Commissioner for Finance and Dean of Commissioners, Chief Fidelis Tilije, thanked the governor for the gesture and appealed for renovation of the existing quarters. Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Godknows Angele, described the new quarters as fully fitted and praised Oborevwori for his support toward their completion.
