
ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has described social media as a vital tool for sustainable development, job creation, and effective branding of the state.
Speaking at the 3rd Edition of the Delta State Social Media Summit held on Thursday at the Maryam Babangida Leisure Park, Asaba, the Governor, represented by his Chief of Staff, Prince Johnson Erijo, commended the organizers for using digital platforms to drive innovation and economic opportunities.
The summit, themed “Brand Delta, Grow Delta,” brought together content creators, entrepreneurs, and media practitioners to explore the vast opportunities of the digital economy. Governor Oborevwori noted that social media has evolved beyond personal interaction into a force for economic growth, political engagement, and cultural promotion.
“The theme of this summit is in line with our aspiration to not only tell our unique story but to leverage that narrative to create opportunities and foster prosperity. Social media offers us a platform to project the positive image of Delta, showcasing our investment opportunities, cultural heritage, and human capital to a global audience,” he said.
He emphasized that digital platforms could empower youths to become creators, entrepreneurs, and influencers, contributing to job creation and economic diversification. He further assured that the State Government and the House of Assembly would continue to create policies that promote digital literacy, infrastructure development, and access to technology.
In his goodwill message, Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, represented by his Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke, highlighted the role of social media in shaping a digitally sharp, economically vibrant, and socially inclusive state.
Earlier, the convener of the summit and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Ossai Ovie Success, said the initiative was designed to equip young people with skills for creativity, entrepreneurship, and digital innovation. Sharing his personal experience, Ossai revealed that his journey into government media engagements began through social media.
He added that the Oborevwori administration had already empowered over 250,000 youths and assured that the summit would further open opportunities for young entrepreneurs.
The event featured lectures, goodwill messages, and youth empowerment packages, with outstanding young entrepreneurs receiving financial and mentoring support.
Among notable speakers were ace musician Harrysong, Dr. Charles Apoki, Dr. Nkem Imarue of Freshstart Interiors and Designs, Pastor Julius Ekweozor, Teacher Chike, Mr. Emmanuel Osazuwa, and Blessing CEO.
The summit closed with a charge to participants to use social media as a tool for positive change, innovation, and growth, in line with the vision of “Brand Delta, Grow Delta.”
