ASABA/Nigeria: The Nigerian Army has approved the establishment of a Model Defence Comprehensive School in Delta State, to serve as the institution for the South-South geopolitical zone, according to the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa.

General Musa made the disclosure on Monday in Asaba during a courtesy visit to the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori. He was represented by the Chief of Defence Administration, Rear Admiral Joseph Akpan.

Rear Admiral Akpan explained that the initiative is part of the military’s national education development plan, which provides for one Model Defence Comprehensive School in each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. He confirmed that Delta State had been selected to host the South-South campus in recognition of Governor Oborevwori’s progressive and transformative leadership style.

“There has been a decision to site a Model Defence Comprehensive School in each of the six geopolitical zones of the country,” Akpan said. “The one for the North Central zone, located in Kaduna State, is already nearing completion, while the South-West project is situated in Ondo State.

“This particular visit is to formally inform His Excellency, the Governor of Delta State, that we have chosen Delta as the host for the South-South project. We are confident in our choice because of the governor’s leadership qualities and the state’s conducive environment.”

He described the planned institution as a “massive national project” that will not only serve as an academic centre of excellence but also enhance national integration and military-civilian collaboration across the Niger Delta.

“We thank the Governor for opening the door for this major project,” he added. “It is something that will bring the entire nation to Delta State — a development every Deltan should be proud of.”

Receiving the delegation on behalf of Governor Oborevwori, the Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, expressed appreciation to the Chief of Defence Staff and the military hierarchy for finding Delta worthy to host the prestigious institution.

He described the project as an honour to the state and assured the military of full cooperation from both the government and people of Delta for its speedy take-off.

“This is a big honour for us,” Onyeme said. “Out of the six states in the South-South, you chose Delta — we deeply appreciate it. Delta is a peaceful state, and we will continue to maintain that peace. We assure you of our total cooperation to ensure this school comes to life as quickly as possible. Whatever support you need from the government or the people, consider it done.”

The Model Defence Comprehensive School is expected to serve as a centre for academic excellence and character development for children of both military personnel and civilians, promoting discipline, unity, and educational advancement across the region.
