ASABA/Nigeria: The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Mr. Mathew Ochei, the Delta State Correspondent of The Punch Newspaper, describing the loss as shocking and devastating to the journalism profession.

In a condolence message issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke, the Speaker extended heartfelt sympathies to the Ochei family and the Ukunzu community in Aniocha North Local Government Area, as well as the Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, the Asaba Correspondents Chapel—where the late journalist served as Vice Chairman—and the entire media fraternity.

Ochei reportedly passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, a development Guwor said had left many in disbelief. He noted that the late journalist’s death was not only a painful loss to his immediate family but also to Delta State, the Ukunzu community and the journalism profession at large.

The Speaker praised Ochei’s dedication, professionalism and contributions to public enlightenment, observing that his sudden departure had created a vacuum within the Delta media space where he was widely respected and valued.

“On behalf of the Delta State House of Assembly, my colleagues and I mourn the untimely demise of Mr. Mathew Ochei, a committed journalist and thorough professional,” Guwor said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, the Ukunzu community, the Delta State NUJ and all those affected by this tragic loss.”

Guwor prayed for the peaceful repose of the late journalist’s soul and asked God to grant his family the strength to bear the irreparable loss. He also sought divine comfort for Ochei’s colleagues, friends and all who mourn him.

He urged the media community and the public to take solace in the impactful life Ochei lived and the enduring legacy of professionalism, service and integrity he left behind.
