ASABA/Nigeria: Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Dennis Emomotimi Guwor, has formally welcomed lawmakers back to plenary following the Christmas and New Year recess, commending Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for what he described as purposeful leadership and a clear commitment to the development of the state.

Guwor, in his opening address at Tuesday’s resumed sitting of the 8th Assembly, on behalf of the leadership of the House, extended warm New Year greetings to members and their families, while urging legislators to recommit themselves to the core responsibilities of lawmaking, oversight and representation.

Reflecting on the performance of the Assembly, the Speaker said the House had remained resolute in the discharge of its constitutional duties, recording notable achievements through the passage of people-oriented bills, adoption of key resolutions and sustained oversight activities that have strengthened governance, transparency and accountability across Delta State.

“Distinguished Colleagues, as we resume legislative business, it is important to reflect on the notable achievements recorded by this 8th Assembly. By the grace of God, this House has remained steadfast in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities. We have passed people-oriented bills, adopted critical resolutions, and carried out effective oversight that has contributed meaningfully to improved governance, transparency, and accountability across the state,” Guwor said.

He added that the various committees of the House have continued to function diligently, engaging Ministries, Departments and Agencies to ensure adherence to legislative approvals and the prudent use of public resources, stressing that such engagements reflect the Assembly’s collective resolve to advance the welfare and aspirations of Deltans.

The Speaker also expressed appreciation to Governor Oborevwori for what he termed his efficient and effective leadership style, purposeful governance and unwavering dedication to the development of the state. He cited the recent groundbreaking ceremony of the Otovwodo Junction Flyover in Ughelli North as clear and irrefutable evidence of responsive and people-centred governance.

According to him, the governor’s policies, infrastructural investments and prudent management of resources have continued to deliver tangible dividends across the three senatorial districts of Delta State.

Guwor assured that the harmonious working relationship between the Legislature and the Executive, founded on mutual respect and a shared vision for a stronger and more prosperous Delta State, would be sustained. He pledged the continued support of the House to the governor through sound legislation and constructive oversight in the overall interest of the people.

Looking ahead, the Speaker said the Assembly would remain focused on enacting laws that promote economic growth, peace and security, social welfare, youth empowerment and infrastructural development, while intensifying its oversight functions to ensure effective implementation of government policies and programmes.

“As we approach the remaining part of the Third Session, I urge us to proceed with renewed vigour, unity of purpose and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Let our debates be robust but respectful, our engagements constructive, and our decisions guided solely by the collective interest of Deltans,” Guwor said.
