Delta Torch Presentation Showcases Ikpokpo’s Drive for Grassroots Sports Growth

Hon. Itiako Ikpokpo addressing journalists shortly after the presentation of the Niger Delta Games Torch of Unity in Asaba, highlighting the competition’s focus on talent discovery and regional sports development.

ASABA/Nigeria: Organisers of the Niger Delta Games, led by Project Consultant Itiako Ikpokpo, on Monday presented the ceremonial torch to the government of Delta State, spotlighting the competition’s mission of transforming raw regional talent into future champions.

The presentation ceremony at Government House, Asaba, saw Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme receive the torch on behalf of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, while Ikpokpo outlined the strategic vision behind the Games and their long-term developmental impact on sports across the Niger Delta region.

Addressing officials and stakeholders, Ikpokpo explained that the Games were conceived as a deliberate intervention to prevent promising athletes from losing opportunities due to limited exposure and lack of structured platforms. He stressed that the initiative was intentionally designed to identify, nurture and develop talents within the region rather than allowing them drift elsewhere in search of recognition.

He noted that the tournament, sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission, is anchored on principles that prioritise grassroots discovery, professional grooming and long-term athlete development. According to him, the Niger Delta is richly endowed with sporting potential capable of producing national and international champions if properly harnessed.

“We believe our athletes should not be pushed to other parts of the country because we have abundant talents in each state of the Niger Delta. The essence of this competition is to harness those talents and give them the opportunity to grow,” Ikpokpo stated.

He disclosed that more than 4,000 athletes will compete in 16 sporting events scheduled to hold in Benin City, assuring that adequate preparations have been concluded to guarantee a smooth and successful competition.

Emphasising the philosophy behind the festival, Ikpokpo said the championship is not primarily about winning medals but about identifying future stars who can make meaningful contributions to their states and to the country. He maintained that talent discovery, youth engagement and regional integration remain the core objectives of the initiative.

Reflecting on previous outings, he recalled that the maiden edition held in Uyo recorded remarkable success and expressed optimism that the forthcoming edition would consolidate on those gains while expanding opportunities for emerging athletes.

Ikpokpo also commended the Delta State Government for its cooperation and support, expressing confidence that participating states would compete in a spirit of unity, healthy rivalry and shared regional pride.

Responding briefly, Onyeme praised the organisers for using sports as a tool for youth empowerment and regional integration, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to initiatives that promote development, peace and collaboration across the Niger Delta.

The presentation of the torch signals the ceremonial countdown to the Games, which stakeholders say will serve as a rallying platform for sports development, talent discovery and sustained inter-state cooperation in the region.
