NPA Unveils Sweeping Reforms to Decongest Ports, Targets Efficiency with Single Window System

Managing Director of NPA, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho

LAGOS/Nigeria: The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the nation’s port system through the rollout of the National Single Window project and a comprehensive ports modernisation programme aimed at boosting efficiency and eliminating longstanding bottlenecks.

The Managing Director of NPA, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, made this known during an interactive session with journalists in Lagos, where he outlined the agency’s strategic roadmap for repositioning the maritime sector.

Represented by the General Manager, Corporate and Strategic Communications, Mr. Ikechukwu Onyemakara, the NPA boss said the initiatives are designed to tackle persistent challenges such as port congestion and delays in cargo clearance, which have continued to hinder optimal operations.

He explained that the implementation of the National Single Window system would streamline processes, reduce human interference and enhance transparency in port transactions.

Speaking on the electronic truck call-up system (ETO), Dantsoho disclosed that the platform is currently undergoing review ahead of the expiration of its contract, with a view to improving its efficiency and addressing stakeholder concerns.

According to him, the ETO system was initially introduced to tackle logistics challenges, particularly those affecting Apapa and its environs, and has since recorded significant improvements in port access and traffic management.

“After the contract expires, we will conduct a review, especially in response to complaints, to improve its performance. The review will be carried out by NPA in collaboration with the Truck Transit Park (TTP), after which a renewed ETO system will be introduced,” he said.

On cargo evacuation, the NPA MD maintained that the choice of transportation mode ultimately rests with port users, noting that the Authority’s role is to provide an enabling environment for efficient operations.

He added that while the NPA has introduced barge operations as an alternative means of cargo movement, operators must make the option more attractive to customers.

“It is the customer that will decide if they want to take their cargo by barges; NPA is there to create the environment,” he stated.

Dantsoho further revealed that efforts are ongoing to strengthen multimodal logistics, including rail transportation from the APMT terminal and other alternative cargo evacuation channels.

He expressed optimism that the Authority’s reform agenda would leave a lasting legacy in the maritime sector, positioning Nigerian ports for global competitiveness.

The NPA boss also called on the media to remain proactive in holding institutions accountable, stressing the critical role of a free and vibrant press in national development.

“The media must continue to be creative and step up its role as watchdog of the society,” he added.
