UGBOMRO/Nigeria: Christians have been urged to embrace the true meaning of Easter by demonstrating love, gratitude, and responsibility to those who have impacted their lives, particularly parents and loved ones, as they celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Delivering his Easter Sunday homily at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Ugbomro, on April 5, 2026, Rev. Fr. Francis Oshevire called on the faithful to reflect deeply on the lessons of Christ’s resurrection, stressing that Easter goes beyond celebration to a renewed commitment to purposeful living.
The cleric drew inspiration from the biblical account of Mary Magdalene, describing her as a symbol of unwavering devotion and faith, noting that her closeness to the resurrection was a result of her steadfast love for Christ despite her past.
“Mary Magdalene did not allow her past to define her. She remained with Christ even at the most difficult moment. Her love and loyalty brought her closest to the resurrection,” he said.
Fr. Oshevire emphasized that true love is expressed through sacrifice, presence, and genuine care, rather than mere words, lamenting that many people fail to appreciate those who stood by them in times of need.
He challenged the congregation to examine their relationships, particularly with their parents, warning against the growing trend of neglect and indifference.
“Some of us forget those who raised us. We remember them only when they are gone. But love must be shown now, not later,” he said.
The priest urged Christians to take deliberate steps to show appreciation, including maintaining regular contact, offering support, and expressing gratitude to those who made sacrifices for their wellbeing.
“Ask yourself: what are you doing for those who sacrificed for you? Do you call them? Do you care for them? Do you appreciate them?” he queried.
He warned that many people often regret their actions after losing loved ones, stressing the importance of valuing relationships while there is still time.
“Don’t wait until it is too late. Many people cry after death but failed to show love when it mattered,” he cautioned.
Fr. Oshevire further described Easter as a season of transformation, calling on Christians to renew their commitment to compassion, humility, and responsibility in their daily lives.
“As we celebrate the resurrection, let us also resurrect love in our hearts — love for God, for family, and for one another,” he added.
The homily resonated strongly with worshippers, as the priest underscored the need for self-examination and a conscious effort to live a life anchored on kindness, appreciation, and meaningful human relationships.
