UGHELLI/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has extolled the virtues of Mrs. Esther Ahon as she marked her 100th birthday, describing the centenarian as a shining example of humility, discipline and enduring family values whose life continues to inspire generations.

The governor’s tribute was delivered by the Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Council, Olorogun Jaro Egbo, during a thanksgiving service held at Bishop Agori-Iwe Memorial Anglican Church, Ovwodavwaren, Ughelli, where family members, community leaders and well-wishers gathered to honour the milestone.

In his message, Oborevwori noted that Mrs. Ahon’s century-long journey reflects a legacy built on dignity, moral uprightness and selfless devotion to family and community.

He stressed that the celebration was not solely about longevity, but about the values the matriarch represents, particularly her commitment to raising responsible children and contributing positively to society.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s respect for senior citizens, assuring that their welfare and dignity remain a priority.

He further observed that beyond titles and public recognition, the most cherished honour remains the revered status of “Okpakorere,” a distinction he described as divinely bestowed and rooted in character.

In a sermon, Venerable Oghomena Diakeleho-Edjere described the celebrant as a devout Christian whose dedication to the church has been consistent and exemplary, highlighting her punctuality and active participation in church activities.

He prayed for continued strength and grace for the centenarian, urging others to emulate her life of faith and service.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr. Moses Ahon expressed gratitude to God for what he described as a rare privilege, noting that Mrs. Ahon is the first member of the family to attain the age of 100.

He said the celebration marked a moment of pride not only for the immediate family but also for the wider community, appreciating the presence of dignitaries, traditional rulers and guests who came to celebrate with them.

The centenary event featured a solemn thanksgiving service, prayers and tributes, followed by a colourful reception where the celebrant was joined by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to cut her birthday cake, bringing the celebration to a joyful close.
