ASABA/Nigeria: A potentially tragic flood disaster was averted in Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, on Friday evening when a group of courageous residents risked their lives to rescue a man who was being swept away by raging floodwaters following a torrential rainfall.
The dramatic rescue, captured in a video that surfaced on Saturday, has drawn widespread commendation, with residents describing the victim’s survival as a miracle and the actions of his rescuers as heroic.
The heavy downpour, accompanied by strong winds, turned several roads and drainage channels across the community into fast-flowing streams, disrupting movement and leaving many residents stranded.
Amid the chaos, panic broke out when an unidentified man was suddenly caught in the powerful current and dragged into a deep drainage channel.
Eyewitnesses said the victim struggled helplessly against the force of the rushing water as terrified residents watched the frightening scene unfold.
The viral video showed the tense moments when at least five men formed a human chain and battled the raging flood to reach the victim.
As the rescue operation unfolded, anxious residents gathered around the scene, offering prayers and words of encouragement while the rescuers fought to pull the man to safety.
“God save him! God have mercy!” a distressed woman repeatedly cried out as the dramatic rescue effort continued.
Another eyewitness recounted how close the victim came to drowning.
“From where I was standing, I could only see his head above the water. The flood was carrying him away. We thought we were going to lose him,” the witness said.
For several agonising moments, fears mounted that the man would disappear beneath the floodwaters. However, through determination, teamwork and sheer courage, the rescuers eventually succeeded in pulling him from the drainage channel.
The survivor was later seen seated by the roadside, visibly shaken and exhausted but alive, as residents gathered around to comfort him and assess his condition.
Residents who witnessed the incident described his survival as nothing short of miraculous, noting the speed and force with which the floodwaters swept through the area.
One woman, speaking from a nearby balcony, attributed the outcome to divine intervention.
“God is merciful. This is a miracle. The water carried him from the far end of the road all the way here, yet he survived,” she said.
The incident has once again brought attention to the growing threat of flooding in many communities across Delta State during the rainy season, particularly in areas where drainage channels are inadequate, poorly maintained or obstructed.
While the identity of the rescued man could not be immediately ascertained, residents said the incident serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of community spirit and collective action during emergencies.
As calm gradually returned to Okpanam after the storm, the brave actions of the rescuers stood out as a shining example of courage and humanity, proving that even in the face of nature’s fury, ordinary citizens can become lifesavers when it matters most.
