ASABA/Nigeria: Preparations for the 2026 edition of Bel Dialogue have gathered momentum with the appointment of veteran broadcaster and media executive, Mr. Lawrence Okpewho, as moderator for this year’s public policy engagement focused on democratic governance and institutional accountability.
The annual forum, organised by Bel Media Consult Limited, publishers of Ndokwa Reporters and The Brief, is scheduled to hold on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at David’s Event Centre, Anwai Road, Asaba. Discussions will revolve around the theme, “Democracy That Works: Bridging the Gap Between Votes, Results and Institutional Accountability,” while former Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Hon. Mike Igini, will chair the event.
The appointment was announced in a statement issued by the Secretary of the Bel Dialogue Advisory Board, Enebeli Emmanuel Ochonogor, on behalf of the Chairman of the Board, Pharm. (Dr.) Paul O. Enebeli.
According to the Advisory Board, Okpewho’s selection reflects his extensive experience in broadcast journalism, programme moderation and public communication, as well as his longstanding reputation for facilitating thoughtful conversations on issues of public interest.
Widely regarded as one of Delta State’s accomplished broadcast professionals, Okpewho spent 35 years with the Delta State Broadcasting Service (DBS), where he rose through the ranks before retiring in 2020 as Deputy General Manager and Head of Programmes.
He began his broadcasting career in 1985 at the former Radio Bendel, producing and presenting numerous radio programmes over the years. Among them was “Na So We Seam,” an indigenous programme that remained on air for 26 years and became one of the longest-running radio productions in the state’s broadcasting history.
Beyond the newsroom and studio, Okpewho has continued to shape the broadcasting profession through leadership and mentorship. After leaving public service, he managed Sleek FM, Agbor, before taking over as General Manager of Kruzz FM, Asaba, where he continues to oversee operations and mentor emerging broadcasters.
His academic and professional development reflects decades of investment in media practice. He holds a Diploma from Auchi Polytechnic, a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in Mass Communication and a Master’s degree in Communication Management from Delta State University, Abraka. He has also participated in specialised broadcast training organised by the BBC and the National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa (NEMISA).
Bel Dialogue is an annual, non-partisan civic engagement platform that brings together policymakers, professionals, civil society organisations, the media and citizens for evidence-based conversations on governance, leadership and national development. Unlike conventional conferences, the forum encourages audience participation, allowing stakeholders to engage directly on issues affecting democratic institutions and public accountability.
Organisers said this year’s edition will examine practical ways of strengthening confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process, improving institutional performance and fostering greater accountability between elected officials and the citizens they serve.
