ASABA/Nigeria: A 48-year-old resident of Effurun, Delta State, escaped a potentially deadly robbery attack after he engaged one of two masked intruders in a struggle, forcing them to abandon their locally made shotgun and flee.
The incident was disclosed by the Delta State Police Command through its Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, in a statement issued in Asaba on Tuesday. The command said the suspects remain at large and that a manhunt has been launched for them.
According to the police, the incident occurred at about 5:30am on September 4, 2026, when the two masked men allegedly broke into the victim’s residence in the Charlisco area along NPA Express Road, Effurun.
One of the suspects was reportedly armed with a locally made shotgun when the victim confronted him and attempted to wrest control of the weapon.
During the struggle, the firearm broke, prompting the suspects to abandon it and flee.
The police said the second suspect allegedly struck the victim on the forehead before both men escaped from the residence.
The victim subsequently reported the incident at the Ekpan Police Division at about 6:14am, following which the Divisional Police Officer deployed operatives to the scene.
The officers recovered the damaged firearm, while the injured victim was taken to a hospital for medical attention.
The command said efforts were ongoing to identify and arrest the two suspects.
In a separate operation in Agbor, operatives of the Special Anti-Kidnapping Unit (SAKU), Ubulu-Uku, arrested a 40-year-old woman, identified as Joy Anthony, over alleged involvement in the distribution of illicit drugs.
Edafe said the suspect was arrested at about 5:00am on September 6 following what the police described as credible intelligence.
Police operatives subsequently executed a search warrant at her residence in Agbor-Obi, where they allegedly recovered quantities of substances identified as Swinol, Tramadol, Codeine and Canadian Loud, as well as weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.
The suspect and the recovered exhibits have been taken into police custody as investigation continues.
The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Samuel E. Erale, commended the Effurun victim for his courage in confronting the intruders and assured him that the police would intensify efforts to track down the fleeing suspects.
Erale also urged residents to support the police with credible information that could assist in preventing and investigating criminal activities across the state.
