A New Face For The Niger Delta Region Is Inevitable, Says Senator Omo-Agege

ABUJA/Nigeria: The Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate and Senator representing Delta Central senatorial district in the National Assembly (NASS), Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has has said that a new face for th development of Niger Delta Area is inevitable.

The Deputy Senate President, who was represented by Mr Joseph Adinmadau stated this on Thursday October 21st at the 2021 Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) public lecture with the theme: “Niger Delta Economy: Building A New Face For The Region”, in Asaba Delta state.

According to him, over the years, lack of economic activities has pushed people, especially the youngmen into illegal and violence activities to fend livelihood for themselves.

However, he said the federal government is investing in infrastructure to improving the living conditions of the people in the region. He listed such projects is the Lagos to Calaber rail line which when completed, is expected to provide job for the teeming population of the region.

He stated that the completion of this project will give the region a new identity at completion.

Speaking further, the Deputy Senate President, told the online publishers that they have a critical role to play in this regard.

“It is no doubt, online publishers plays a critical role. It is very important that through the online space, civic participation in Nigeria has grown that even our people have to participate in civic discussions.

“Publishers need to develop sources and represent the diversity of facts of the the people they serve particularly in our clime that is multi ethnic and multi religious.

“Let me remind the members of Delta Online Publishers Forum not to forget the purpose of online publishing which is all about journalism and the media.

“I therefore call on the online publishers to distinguish themselves at all times and follow the path of prosperity, fairness and truth.

“Members of this forum should abide and operate in the traditional ways of developmental journalism which is through investigations. Ethical standard is essential.

“I therefore hope that the online publishers in Delta state will imbibe professionalism in their publishing. I charge you on the need to uphold ethical practices and help in building better Delta and better Nigeria”, he added.
