BENIN-CITY/Nigeria: An appeal has gone to Edo State Government to jettison its proposed plan to create two faculties with an intention to relocate the faculties of Engineering and Agriculture from the University town.
The Ambrose Alli University Alumni Association Worldwide made the appeal during its National Executive Council meeting held in Benin City, the Edo State capital.
A statement from the President of the association, Barr. Dave Emakunu and the Secretary-General, Hon. Johnson Akpolome and made available to newsmen, the University alumni association said that creating and siting campuses in Oredo and Owan West Local Government Areas would be cost effective considering the huge amount needed to run a university.
The association further noted that as a single campus the university was not meeting its financial needs as a result of underfunding, stressing that such development could affect the academic activities in one way or the other.
According to Barr. Emakunu and Hon. Akpolome, the National Executive Council of the association found out that multiple campus experiment would cause logistics problems that could be unbearable to the students, adding that the State Government should adequately fund the University and build infrastructure in the university.
It further decried a situation where some key principal officers such as the Vice Chancellor and Registrar of the University were in acting capacity on certificate of graduates, explaining that such could affect the credibility of the certificates issued by the university.
The NEC of the association also appealed to Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki to dissolve the Special Intervention Team and set up a credible Governing Council for the university to take deliberate steps towards ensuring that substantive management team was put in place for the university.
Present at the meeting were national officers and chairpersons of the various chapters across the country.
