ABEOKUTA/Nigeria: Pandemonium broke out as residents within Abeokuta metropolis expressed their grievances towards the government and water agencies over the unavailability of water supply in some communities.
Findings showed that the ‘government’s water’, as it is commonly referred to, has not been supplied to some major communities in the last two weeks.
Most residents have resorted to ‘Keg lifting’ from one place to another in search of water.
Some of the affected communities includes; Amolasho- Isabo axis, Oke-Sokori axis, Quarry Road, Omida- Panseke axis, Ibara axis, Oke-ilewo axis, Onikoko- Adigbe axis, Saraki- Kolobo axis as well as some parts of Oluwo-Mango axis.
Residents are usually seen roaming around houses and streets with their Kegs to fetch water from any available source.
This cannot be unconnected to the rural underdevelopment of some community areas and its lack of provision for boreholes and wells as sources for water.
While fielding responses from some residents, they lamented over the poor proactivnesss of the government and water agencies to come to the rescue to solving this impending crises.
Furthermore, some residents said ‘they have to buy a keg of water at the rate of N100 for them to get access to water. While others would wake up as early 4:30 am in search clean water.’
However, at the time of filing this report, no official statement has been issued to explain the reason for the seizure. Although some residents accredited the fault to the on going road construction.
