ABUJA/Nigeria: After months of official silence and public denial, the Federal Government has now formally acknowledged that there was indeed an attempted coup against the administration of President Bola Tinubu, following the conclusion of investigations by the Defence Headquarters into the arrest of sixteen military officers over acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations.
The Defence Headquarters disclosed that investigations into the case, first announced in October 2025, have been concluded and the report forwarded to appropriate superior authorities in line with extant military regulations.
In a statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the Armed Forces of Nigeria said the comprehensive inquiry, conducted in accordance with established military procedures, carefully examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel.
“The findings have identified a number of the officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government, which is inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards required of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” the statement said.
Accordingly, the military high command announced that officers with cases to answer will be formally arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels to face trial in line with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations.
Major General Uba explained that the process was designed to ensure accountability while upholding the principles of fairness and due process, stressing that the measures being taken are purely disciplinary.
“The actions form part of ongoing institutional mechanisms to preserve order, discipline and operational effectiveness within the ranks,” he said.
Reaffirming the loyalty of the Armed Forces to the nation’s democratic order, the Defence Headquarters assured Nigerians that the military remains resolute in maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty and respect for constitutional authority.
The military leadership added that it remains committed to safeguarding national stability and ensuring that no form of misconduct or disloyalty undermines the integrity of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
