URO-IRRI/Nigeria: Sir Itiako Malik Ikpokpo has moved to consolidate support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta South Senatorial District, declaring that his political structure will work for the victory of the party’s candidates in the 2027 general elections despite his withdrawal from the party’s senatorial primary.
The declaration came on Wednesday after members of the Ikpokpo Political Family met at the politician’s country home in Uro-Irri, where they unanimously resolved to mobilise grassroots support for President Bola Tinubu, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and other APC candidates in the next general election.
The meeting, attended by coordinators and members drawn from the eight local government areas of Delta South Senatorial District, was the second strategic gathering of the political group ahead of the 2027 polls.
Addressing members, Ikpokpo said the meeting was convened to review political developments, hear members’ concerns and forge a common direction as preparations for the elections gather momentum.
He acknowledged that his withdrawal from the APC Delta South Senatorial primary election was a difficult experience but said he had accepted the outcome and remained committed to the party.
“As a loyal party member, I have put that experience behind me. My focus now is to work with other members to ensure the APC records victory in the 2027 general elections,” he said.
Ikpokpo, a former Director-General of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and former Chairman of Isoko South Local Government, expressed confidence in the leadership of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, whom he said were implementing policies aimed at improving governance and economic development.
Reflecting on his years as council chairman between 2014 and 2021, he said local governments experienced significant financial constraints during the period, but argued that recent fiscal reforms had improved funding for sub-national governments.
He also welcomed the Federal Government’s efforts to advance discussions on state policing, describing the initiative as an important step toward addressing the country’s security challenges.
While admitting that the Tinubu administration still faces economic and governance challenges, Ikpokpo said he believed the government was pursuing reforms capable of placing the country on a stronger footing.
On Delta State, he commended Governor Oborevwori for ongoing infrastructure projects and what he described as efforts to strengthen stakeholder engagement and party cohesion.
He appealed to members of the political family to set aside internal grievances and remain united, saying unity would strengthen the APC’s chances in Delta South during the 2027 elections.
At the end of the meeting, members adopted a resolution committing the Ikpokpo Political Family to grassroots mobilisation across Delta South in support of all APC candidates in the 2027 general elections.
